Following that first memorable meeting with Nathalie Gallon, our exchange continued around a central theme of my work: metamorphosis.
In her article Extension of the Domain of Lacquer, she captured with almost unsettling precision what I strive to convey through my works.
She wrote: “As in a variation, the form appears in its unlimited capacity for metamorphosis.” This sentence immediately resonated with me. Every piece, every layer, evolves and changes over time and with the light. Art is never static, and Nathalie understood and expressed this perfectly.
We also discussed the complex relationship I have with the material. This dialogue between control and letting go, which Nathalie so aptly described, is at the heart of my creative process. “You can dive into these markers of painting and follow how this colourful immersion stops being a screen for projection and becomes the material itself.”
Thanks to Nathalie, my work has taken on a new resonance, and I have discovered new ways to think about metamorphosis within my pieces.
